Got Milk? Health groups, groups often supported by the government and dairy producers, run ads with this phrase often, using happy models with big milk mustaches. According to the dairy council and other government funded health groups, milk, health, and vitality go hand in hand. They claim dairy foods, like milk and cheese, are good for the body, 'preventing' osteoporosis and other physical maladies. But do the words milk, health, and vitality really deserve to be in the same sentence? I've seen good reason to doubt the milk/health correlation. Many studies have shown that milk, contrary to popular belief, is bad for you. Let's take a look at some of the facts on dairy foods, milk, and health. Milk, cheese, and other dairy foods are loaded with fat Take a look at the nutrition fact for whole milk. Health promoting food my eye! How much fat is in one 8 ounce serving of whole milk? 8 grams, 5 of which are the artery clogging saturated fats. Even if you do get reduced fat versions of yogurt, cheese, and milk, health risks are still high. When dairy products are manufactured, they undergo a process called homogenization. When dairy foods are homogenized, the fats inside are broken down into tiny particles so a layer of foam does not float on top. Unfortunately, according to Jon Barron in his book Lessons From the Miracle Doctors, broken down fat particles are easily absorbed by the body. This means arteries get clogged much more easily by dairy food and milk fats. Of course you can still get nonfat milk, health option chosen by many dairy consumers. But dairy foods still have more problems than just fat. The milk/health dilemma goes much deeper than the fat issue. Casein proteins in milk hurt your immune system Dairy foods contain a certain protein called casein. According to Jon Barron, studies have shown that casein proteins from milk hurt health because the proteins attack the human immune system. Casein is poorly digested, meaning dairy foods, though high in protein, aren't a good source of protein. Dairy foods often contain antibiotic resistant bacteria Surely you've heard about MRSA, a drug resistant bacteria known to kill. Most dairy cows are fed with antibiotic-laced feed. This, in turn, gradually creates bacteria resistant antibiotics. These bacteria can then be passed into the milk cows give. Although these bacteria aren't as deadly as the MRSA bacteria, they can still milk bad for your health. Even though dairy foods are pasteurized, a process that eliminates bad bacteria from dairy foods like yogurt and milk, health problems can stem from pasteurization. Pasteurization also kills the good bacteria. For instance, Yoplait is known for advertising their yogurts as good for digestion. That's because raw, unpasteurized dairy foods have lots of good bacteria that do, in fact, aid in digestion. But pasteurization kills the bacteria, removing the good digestion factor of the yogurt and milk health benefits. To put it simply, milk health benefits are lost the moment milk and other dairy foods undergo pasteurization. What other adult animal drinks milk? None. None except the human. We, as humans, drink milk because health groups tell us to and because dairy foods taste good. But truth be told, milk is meant to make babies grow up and gain weight fast. Think about it. A baby cow drinks its mother's milk to grow from 20 pounds to a thousand pounds. What do you think will happen to humans as they drink cow's milk? Health problems from weight gain galore! Cow's milk was meant for baby cows, not to make dairy foods for adult humans. There are so many more milk health issues I could cover, such as increased mucous congestion, poor digestion, and the growth hormones used in cows. I've personally stopped my GERD problems by cutting dairy foods completely out of my diet.
