About 'nutritional value in milk'|... quality of breast milk. Decreases immune...of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded...because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it...








It               seems               the               board               of               supervisors               in               San               Francisco               has               decided               that               they               can               make               better               choices               children               than               their               parents               can.

It               seems               Happy               Meals               won't               be               so               happy               in               San               Francisco.

On               November               2,               2010               the               San               Francisco               board               of               supervisors               voted               8-3               to               pass               a               veto               proof               law               to               place               restrictions               on               meals               for               children               that               come               with               free               toys.

Your               child               can               no               longer               get               a               soda               and               fries               with               their               Happy               Meal               in               San               Francisco               and               also               get               a               free               toy.
               I               am               seriously               left               to               wonder,               where               does               this               stop?

As               the               parent               of               a               now               teenage               child,               fast               food               was               a               treat               for               my               child               during               her               Happy               Meal               years.

We               had               pretty               well               balanced               meals               at               home               and               often,               even               on               her               trips               to               fast               food               restaurants               her               choice               for               a               meal               was               a               salad               versus               a               burger.

She               was               not               offered               sodas               at               home               and               when               we               went               to               restaurants               her               choice               of               a               soda               or               chocolate               milk               was               again,               a               treat               for               her.
               As               a               parent               it               is               my               job               to               make               good               choices               in               my               child's               diet               and               if               on               occasion,               I               wanted               to               give               her               a               treat               of               French               fries               and               a               soda               then               that               was               up               to               me,               not               the               local               government               who               knew               nothing               of               me,               my               child               or               how               we               lived.
               It               is               clear               there               is               an               obesity               problem               among               our               young               people               and               I               am               all               for               not               allowing               sodas               to               be               sold               in               machines               at               schools.

I,               as               a               parent               am               not               there               to               monitor               my               child               consuming               products               out               of               vending               machines               but               in               a               fast               food               restaurant,               I               was               there               with               her               until               she               was               old               enough               to               drive               herself               to               these               establishments               on               her               own.
               I               believe               most               parents               are               conscious               of               what               they               are               feeding               their               children,               the               health               risks               involved               as               well               as               the               benefits               of               a               good,               balanced               diet.

Besides,               most               parents               don't               want               to               deal               with               a               child               on               a               sugar               high,               so               more               often               than               not,               these               items               are               limited               in               most               households.
               If               the               government               feels               that               a               parent               is               putting               their               child               at               risk               by               failing               to               give               them               proper               nutrition               then               they               need               to               step               in,               have               CPS               check               the               home               and               determine               if               the               parents               are               fit               to               be               raising               said               child.
               Happy               Meals               are               not               the               cause               of               obesity               and               one               Happy               Meal               is               not               going               to               make               or               break               the               well               being               of               a               child.

We               trust               parents               with               their               children               yet               now               San               Francisco               board               of               supervisors               is               telling               parents               that               their               choices               for               their               children               are               not               to               be               trusted               to               allow               their               children               treats               from               time               to               time?
               Maybe,               the               obesity               problem               in               this               country               would               improve               with               a               better               economy.

Parents               who               are               at               poverty               level               can               afford               to               feed               their               children               properly.

Sadly               hamburger               and               pasta               are               still               the               cheapest               things               in               the               supermarket               along               with               things               such               as               Ramen               noodles               and               hot               dogs.

Where               is               the               nutritional               value               there?

Most               parents               would               put               leaner               cuts               of               meat               on               the               table               and               more               fresh               fruits               and               vegetables               if               they               were               able               to               afford               them.

I               think               we               need               to               look               at               where               the               real               problem               lies               in               this               case.
               In               a               country               that               is               supposed               to               be               free,               but               can               still               pass               laws               telling               parents               how               they               can               offer               their               children               a               treat.

when               the               time               will               come               that               the               government               will               decide               the               adults               are               too               fat               and               just               outlaw               French               fries               and               soda               completely?
               It's               a               shame               that               instead               of               worrying               about               putting               their               citizens               to               work               that               the               San               Francisco               board               of               supervisors               found               they               were               better               served               by               impeding               free               choice               of               their               citizens.

Happy               Meals               are               not               so               happy               in               San               Francisco.

    About 'nutritional milk'|The Nutritional Benefits of Goat Milk








    I               was               a               vegetarian               for               many               years.

    For               a               briefer               period               of               time               I               was               vegan.

    Vegans               choose               not               to               eat               any               animal               products,               which               would               include               eggs,               cheese               and               milk               to               name               a               few               limitations.

    When               I               first               became               vegan               I               needed               to               find               a               milk               substitute               because               I               do               enjoy               cooking               with               milk,               including               cream               based               soups               and               casseroles.

    I               first               tried               soy               milk               but               hated               the               after               taste               which               made               me               make               a               sour               face.

    I               did               not               like               the               taste               of               soy               milk               in               prepackaged               products,               whether               it               was               vegan               organic               soups               made               with               soy               milk,               or               frozen               entrees,               or               just               trying               soy               milk               straight               up               to               drink               or               poured               over               cereal.

    Then               I               tried               rice               milk.

    The               taste               difference               for               me               was               like               night               and               day,               and               I               was               happily               pleased               with               rice               milk               as               a               "real"               milk               alternative.

    Before               the               1990's               boxed               drinks               were               not               so               common               place               as               they               are               now.

    Today               it               is               common               to               find               boxed               juices               and               milk               products               and               milk               alternatives               and               even               soups               and               much               more               in               boxes.

    I               first               discovered               box               drinks               overseas               in               the               1980's               long               before               they               became               commonplace               here               in               the               United               States,               where               they               are               now               very               popular.

    Rice               Milk               was               the               first               boxed               drink               I               ever               tried.
                   Rice               milk               is               great               because               unlike               regular               refrigerator               milk,               you               don't               need               to               refrigerate               it               until               you               open               it.

    It               has               a               fairly               long               shelf               life               too.

    So,               for               example               if               you               are               one               of               those               people               who               doesn't               know               how               much               milk               you               will               need               in               any               given               period               of               time,               rice               milk               is               great               so               you               don't               have               wasted               milk               to               throw               out               because               of               short               expiration               dates.
                   Sometimes               for               weeks               I               would               not               use               "milk"               and               sometimes               I               would               use               quite               a               bit               because               of               cooking               or               having               company.

    Rice               milk               is               agreat               solution               not               only               for               vegans,               but               for               anyone               who               likes               to               have               milk               on               hand               for               an               emergency               or               a               snow               storm,               power               outage,               bad               weather               etc.
                   Rice               milk               has               a               naturally               sweet               taste.

    So               if               you               are               making               a               recipe               that               calls               for               sugar,               you               need               to               scale               back               the               amount               of               sugar               you               use               to               not               make               your               recipe               too               sweet.
                   Also,               if               you               are               using               rice               milk               as               a               cooking               ingredient               to               replace               regular               milk,               do               not               accidentally               use               flavored               rice               milk,               such               as               vanilla               rice               milk.

    Choosing               a               flavored               rice               milk               could               ruin               a               recipe!

    So               be               warned!
                   Rice               milk               makes               recipes               creamier.

    You               can               use               rice               milk               for               many               many               recipes,               from               vegan               fettuccine               alfredo,               making               home               made               creamy               potato               soup,               mushroom               soup,               leek               soup,               or               vegetable               casseroles.

    You               can               make               vegetarian               lasagne               or               baked               ziti,               or               pumpkin               bread               or               pudding,               fantastic               rice               pudding,               vegan               mashed               potatoes,               even               chocolate               frosting               for               cake!

    The               uses               for               rice               milk               are               almost               limitless.
                   Rice               milk               is               great               for               those               people               who               are               lactose               intolerant,               and               for               people               who               lead               a               vegan               lifestyle.

    But               you               don't               have               to               be               lactose               intolerant               or               vegan               to               enjoy               both               the               taste,               benefits               and               ease               and               convenience               of               rice               milk               in               every               day               cooking.
                   You               can               use               rice               milk               to               make               smoothies               and               shakes,               to               make               vegan               ice               cream,               and               puddings               or               to               make               creamy               hot               oatmeal               with               fruit.
                   My               experience               with               rice               milk               is               I               like               to               use               an               open               carton               within               3               days               for               best               tasting               freshest               results.

    If               you               don't               feel               you               can               use               a               whole               carton,               you               can               buy               small               juice               box               size               (individual               servings)               of               rice               milk               and               you               will               not               have               to               worry               about               how               fast               you               use               up               the               product               for               freshness               once               opened.

    Rice               milk               is               also               available               with               added               nutrients               which               some               vegans               may               find               beneficial.

    When               I               go               grocery               shopping               and               reach               the               dairy               beverage               section               I               get               a               gallon               of               milk               for               other               members               in               the               family               and               a               half               gallon               of               soy               milk               for               me.

    Generally               my               four-year-old               son               will               help               me               drink               the               soy               milk.

    It               seems               like               we               always               get               the               same               kind               of               milk               every               week               but               enjoy               trying               out               different               soy               milks.

    One               of               the               most               recent               ones               that               we               tried               was               8th               Continent               Original               Flavor               Soy               Milk.

    Here               is               what               my               son               and               I               thought               of               this               non-dairy               beverage.

    To               the               best               of               my               memory               this               was               the               first               time               that               I               had               tried               anything               by               the               8th               Continent               company.

    I               generally               do               not               have               complaints               about               soy               milk,               but               you               never               know               what               to               expect               from               a               new               product               so               I               did               not               have               any               particular               expectations.

    I               was               very               pleased               to               find               out               that               the               soy               milk               from               8th               Continent               was               very               good.

    I               did               not               feel               as               though               it               had               a               cheap               taste,               and               it               was               more               inexpensive               then               the               leading               soy               milk               brands.

    I               am               always               trying               to               find               ways               to               cut               down               on               our               grocery               bill               and               when               I               can               do               it               without               cutting               out               good               taste               it               is               nice.

    In               addition               to               tasting               good               I               must               say               that               the               ingredients               and               nutrition               facts               of               the               soy               milk               were               very               good.
                   In               one               serving               size               of               8th               Continent               Original               Flavor               Soy               Milk               there               were               80               calories               with               20               calories               from               fat.

    I               was               surprised               to               see               this               because               in               Silk               Original               Flavor               Soymilk               there               are               100               calories               with               35               calories               from               fat.

    The               inexpensive               soy               milk               offered               95               milligrams               of               sodium               and               360               milligrams               of               potassium;               when               compared               to               Silk's               120               milligrams               of               sodium               and               300               milligrams               of               potassium               it               is               incredibly               low               in               sodium.

    I               am               always               impressed               when               I               see               something               that               has               a               reduction               of               sodium.

    The               8th               Continent               Soy               Milk               also               offered               7               grams               of               total               carbohydrates,               7               grams               of               sugars,               and               8               grams               of               protein,               but               no               grams               for               dietary               fiber.

    I               try               and               keep               an               eye               out               for               high               fiber               items               so               I               was               a               little               disappointed               by               this,               but               considering               that               Silk               only               lists               1               gram               for               dietary               fiber               I               was               not               too               concerned;               additionally               Silk               listed               8               grams               of               total               carbohydrates               and               7               grams               of               protein.

    While               I               was               overall               quite               pleased               with               what               I               was               seeing               so               far               in               the               nutrition               facts,               the               vitamins               and               minerals               had               me               rethinking               that.
                   At               first               glance               it               looked               as               though               the               vitamins               and               minerals               found               in               a               serving               of               8th               Continent               Original               Flavor               Soy               Milk               were               good               but               after               comparing               them               to               Silk               I               noticed               some               concerning               things               for               me.

    Both               soy               milks               listed               vitamin               A               with               10%,               vitamin               C               with               0%,               Calcium               with               30%,               iron               with               6%,               and               riboflavin               30%.

    Silk               did               not               list               phosphorus               but               8th               Continent               listed               it               with               25%.

    Magnesium               was               listed               as               6%               for               8th               Continent               and               10%               for               Silk,               vitamin               D               was               listed               as               25%               for               8th               Continent               and               30%               for               Silk,               and               most               concerning               vitamin               B12               was               listed               as               20%               for               8th               Continent               and               50%               for               Silk.

    This               was               most               concerning               to               me               because               vitamin               B12               is               very               important               to               include               in               a               low               or               no-meat               diet,               which               mine               is.

    I               should               mention               that               Silk               listed               folate,               zinc,               and               selenium               with               6%,               4%,               and               8%               respectively               while               8th               Continent               did               not               mention               these.

    The               ingredients               confirmed               what               I               thought               about               this               soy               milk.
                   Since               I               had               compared               the               nutrition               facts               of               Silk               and               8th               Continent               soy               milks               I               thought               that               I               might               as               well               compare               the               ingredients.

    The               8th               Continent               Original               Flavor               Soymilk               consisted               of               soy               milk               made               of               water,               soy               protein,               soybean               oil,               and               calcium               phosphate,               sugar,               potassium               citrate,               natural               and               artificial               flavors,               magnesium               phosphate,               salt,               sodium               polyphosphate,               dipotassium               phosphate,               soy               lecithin,               carrageenan,               xanthan               gum,               riboflavin,               vitamin               A               palmitate,               vitamin               D,               and               vitamin               B12.

    Silk               on               the               other               hand               was               made               of               all               natural               soy               milk,               that               consisted               of               filtered               water               and               whole               soybeans,               all               natural               evaporated               cane               juice,               calcium               carbonate,               sea               salt,               natural               flavors,               carrageenan,               vitamin               A               palmitate,               vitamin               D,               riboflavin,               and               vitamin               B12.

    I               was               disappointed               to               see               artificial               flavors               in               the               8th               Continent               soy               milk.

    When               it               came               to               deciding               if               I               would               purchase               it               again               I               considered               several               things               before               deciding               make               an               opinion               of               this               soy               milk.
                   Overall               I               had               zero               complaints               about               the               taste               of               8th               Continent               Original               Flavor               Soymilk               and               it               was               roughly               50               cents               cheaper               than               the               leading               brand.

    For               the               most               part               I               enjoyed               the               nutrition               facts,               however               I               would               have               liked               to               see               more               vitamin               B12.

    It               was               the               ingredients               that               really               got               to               me,               I               just               prefer               to               get               foods               that               are               free               of               artificial               flavors.

    In               general               I               hope               to               find               an               inexpensive               soy               milk               that               has               natural               flavors,               but               I               imagine               that               if               Silk               is               too               expensive               I               will               get               this               again.

    If               you               are               looking               for               an               inexpensive               soy               milk               I               recommend               trying               this               one,               but               only               if               it               is               significantly               cheaper               than               the               major               brand               that               offers               no               artificial               flavors.
